I was referring to the edge connectors carrying the signals between the system and the device. These are mechanically and electrically different between PCI and PCIe. Your post only referred to PCI, which seemed odd and, together with the other contents of your post, raised a red flag in my mind. I assume you are fully aware that what you are attempting to do is completely unsupported and you are proceding entirely at your own risk. My take on the situation is that you are risking permanent damage to a very expensive device. I would strongly advise looking for a ready-made server solution that comes with a properly integrated K80 GPU.

And also, should I install the Toolkit first and then drivers or drivers first and then Toolkit. Each PCIe auxiliary power connector on a GPU must be hooked up to an appropriate cable from the PSU (power supply unit) for the GPU to work correctly. Avoid converters (e.g. 6-pin to 8-pin, molex to 6-pin) in the supply cables, as well as daisy chaining (multiple connectors on the same cable). Make sure that your PSU has sufficient wattage to drive GPUs, CPUs, and other system components. That said, please keep in mind that mixing brands in the same system, especially a consumer GPU and Datacenter GPUs will be very challenging.
It is highly unlikely to get Linux running on this “Out of the box”.

I have since gotten a K80 since they are even cheaper than the P40s to see whether a similar system could be made with them.
It is supported by CUDA 11, but that support is deprecated which means it will likely be removed in the next major CUDA release.
However, it is still early on this attempt for me, and it took quite a while to get the configuration right for the P40s, so there is some hope yet.
If it can see the card and tell you anything about it (info that can be provided varies by card type).

If you do want to abandon the K80 and use another card, Ubuntu 22.04 appears to be supported from at least Cuda Toolkit 11.7 through to the current 12.6 on cards from what you have now, a Kepler 3.7 through to Hopper 9.0. If you’re asking if the K80 is compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 and the kernel, that shouldn’t be a problem. Read the section about preinstallation actions and do the kernel development thing etc. If you haven’t already, and you want the toolkit, read this, in particular section 3. The K80 has Compute Capability 3.7 and the last driver to support it is the 470 series.

The power through the PCI connector doesn’t seem to be enough to make it work, it definitely needs the 8pin power to even be “on”. So without the power connector problem solved, I make no progress. If you look at the start of the install document I refered to above, the kernel versions mentioned do not match the version you seem to have installed, which could well be the issue. If try to install install “sudo apt install nvidia-utils-470”, the I am getting the following error.

SurgeCell, Could you give some indication about what you had to do to sufficiently cool your K80 and how you are monitoring the card temps? I installed one into a system with an ASUS P9X79-E-WS mobo and got it to solve an ANSYS test simulation but do not have a good way to monitor it yet.
